-Connective tissue connects body parts and is found everywhere

2 common characteristics: Variations in the blood supply and the extracellular matrix

5 major types of connective tissue: Bone, cartilage, dense connective, loose connective, and blood

What is the function of connective tissues?
-Protecting, supporting, and binding together other body tissues

8 major types of connective tissue:

  1. Bone- ability to protect and support other body organs
  2. Cartilage- forms supporting structures of the larynx, attaches ribs to breastbone, and covers ends of many bones
  3. Fibrocartilage- forms the cushion-like disks between vertebrate of the spinal column
  4. Dense Fibrosis- manufactures the building blocks of fibers
  5. Areolar- cushions and protects the body organs it wraps
  6. Adipose- insulates the body and protects it from bumps and extremes of both heat and cold
  7. Reticular- forms the stroma
  8. Blood- consists of blood cells surrounding by a nonliving, fluid matrix, called the blood plasma
