Tissues

4 primary types of tissues, with functions:

  1. Epithelial tissue (epithelium): protection, absorption, filtration, and secretion
  2. Connective tissue: provides protection, binds body tissues together, and supports the body
  3. Muscle tissue: contract, or shorten, to produce movement
  • Skeletal muscle: produces gross body movements or facial expressions
  • Cardiac muscle: pumps blood through blood vessels
  • Smooth muscle: peristalsis, a wavelike activity, is a typical activity
     4. Nervous tissue: receive and conduct electrochemical impulses to and from body parts
