Epithelial Tissue

Image
Epithelial Tissues are located on body coverings, body lining, and glandular tissue. Characteristics of Epithelium: -Closely together and form sheets -Lowers surface rests on a basement membrane -No blood supply -Regenerates easily if well nourished. The functions of the Epithelial Tissue are: -Protection -Absorption - Secretion -Filtration Classification of Epithelia: There are two cell layers, simple and stratified. Shape of cells include the squamous, cuboidal, and columnar.

Function of Tissues

Groups of cells that are similar in structure and function are called tissues. The four primary tissue types-epithelial, connective, nervous, and muscular- interweave to form the fabric of the body. These tissues pull together the basic work done by the cells, as individuals, in order for the organ to properly accomplish its function.

Muscle and Nervous Tissue

Image
Muscle Tissue Characteristics of Muscle Tissue: The function of muscle tissue is to contract to produce movement There are three types of muscles:                - Skeletal                - Smooth                - Cardiac     Skeletal Muscle: This type of muscle is attached to the skeleton to provide movement They have striations (looks like stripes)  Have more that one nucleus Shaped like a long cylinder  They are the only voluntary type of muscle Smooth Muscle: Found in hollow organs such as stomach, blood vessels, and bronchi No visible striations Has only one nucleus (uninucleate)  Spindle-shaped cells Cannot control when or how the muscle moves (involuntary)  Cardiac Muscle: Only found in the heart The function is to pump blood throughout the body  Also has striations like the s...

Tissues

4 primary types of tissues, with functions: Epithelial tissue (epithelium): protection, absorption, filtration, and secretion Connective tissue: provides protection, binds body tissues together, and supports the body Muscle tissue: contract, or shorten, to produce movement Skeletal muscle: produces gross body movements or facial expressions Cardiac muscle: pumps blood through blood vessels Smooth muscle: peristalsis, a wavelike activity, is a typical activity      4. Nervous tissue: receive and conduct electrochemical impulses to and from body parts

Connective Tissue

Characteristics of connective tissues: -Connective tissue connects body parts and is found everywhere 2 common characteristics: Variations in the blood supply and the extracellular matrix 5 major types of connective tissue: Bone, cartilage, dense connective, loose connective, and blood What is the function of connective tissues? -Protecting, supporting, and binding together other body tissues 8 major types of connective tissue: Bone- ability to protect and support other body organs Cartilage- forms supporting structures of the larynx, attaches ribs to breastbone, and covers ends of many bones Fibrocartilage- forms the cushion-like disks between vertebrate of the spinal column Dense Fibrosis- manufactures the building blocks of fibers Areolar- cushions and protects the body organs it wraps Adipose- insulates the body and protects it from bumps and extremes of both heat and cold Reticular- forms the stroma Blood- consists of blood cells surrounding by a nonliving, fl...
